The Forest Service’s renovation for the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory was primarily a mechanical and electrical upgrade to the A-wing of the building with limited work in both the B-wing and C-wing. Critical infrastructure upgrades of the mechanical system involved the removal of the existing air handler that serviced the burn chamber and replacement with a twelve-fan motor array air handler with custom, integrated controls. The mechanical upgrade incorporated new boilers, steam generators, and a glycol system.

The main electrical switch gear was replaced and required significant coordination to ensure that the occupied portions of the building were not affected by the off-hours replacement of the main electrical service. In addition to the gear upgrade, the electrical distribution in the A-wing was upgraded, and additional panels were placed to improve functionality for the scientists that utilize the A-wing for their research.

As part of the interior demolition phase of the A-wing of the building, abatement of asbestos and lead was required. The areas were isolated with containment barriers and negative air machines to ensure that the particulates were controlled within the containment area. Air monitoring and testing were conducted to verify that the abated areas were free and clear of hazardous materials prior to moving forward with the next phase of construction in the controlled area.

Structural upgrades included fortifying the raised platform section within the burn chamber. The existing piers supporting the floor were shored, and an angle iron was installed to provide the additional reinforcement.

The Mountain Line Bus Garage is a 12,000-sf structure that was remodeled to house all the bus line operations including office space, shop, and storage.  The project required the removal of the existing roof and the addition of a new support structure with a second level.

Quality Construction also added new mechanical and electrical systems, all new finishes, and implemented a lot of LEED practices by reusing the previously developed site and existing structure to remain within the footprint of the existing building. The structure is fully sprinkled and ADA compliant.

All work was performed while keeping the bus business in full service and was constructed through the winter, working with typical Montana weather.

The Ravalli Electric Co-op complex project consisted of a cold storage building, maintenance, and repair building, vehicle storage building, and the operations/engineering building. Our team was hired from the beginning of design as Construction Manager to provide all Preconstruction and Construction services in collaboration with MMW Architects.

This 61,500-sf multi-building complex structure houses all the operations for the cooperative, including a maintenance shop, commercial wash bay, lineman support facilities, engineering and design center, conference rooms, executive offices, and training center. The project has state-of-the-art heat pumps and solar mechanical systems, radiant in-floor heating along with a self-contained XERXES fire suppression system.

There was a large site development component to this project including 13.3-ac developed with ponds, walking paths, a storage yard, generator/water storage enclosure, fuel island, and parking.

The very sophisticated and finely appointed structure is the proud home supporting all current and future functions of the Electrical Co-op, designed and constructed to continue to do so for many generations to come.

Quality Construction provided us with multiple ideas throughout the design process which gave us the same or better quality product at a lesser cost. They also gave us realistic cost projections throughout the design process…to date we are on schedule and under budget on our project. There have been zero surprises.

Mark S. Grotbo, PE/General Manager | Ravalli Electric Cooperative

Missoula Decker Truck Line, Inc. is one of 5 regional facilities for a nationwide over-the-road trucking company based out of Iowa. The project covered approximately 10-ac including buildings and a parking area. The facility included a 9,600-sf office building with a drivers lounge, drivers orientation area, dispatch center for 15 people, and general offices.  A separate 16,000-sf maintenance building houses a truck wash that can handle a 90-foot-long truck and trailer as well as regular truck maintenance functions.

Our team provided all construction manager and general contractor services for the project.
